Our roots are planted in the construction trades, and as a result of the relationships nurtured in those endeavors, we were given a fantastic opportunity to provide the public with a unique product.  Our stone products are a by-product of the cement industry, with quarries located in Carroll and Frederick Counties in central Maryland.  All of the stone you will find on this website is reclaimed from mining waste piles.  This "waste" is either a by-product of another production process, or is stone that does not meet the exacting mineral requirements of the stone needed for cement production.   Because our stone is mined for specifically for another end-use, we are consequently able to offer this "waste" product as a pre-consumer recycled material.  No additional mining is required for our purposes here at Comus Stone.  Pre-consumer recycled materials may contribute to overall LEED certification for building projects.

Our stone has nearly limitless uses...building veneers, hardscaping and landscaping projects, as well as aggregates for walkways, roadways, building pads, and parking lots...or anything else the imagination may conjure up.  At Comus, we feel that we offer not only a slightly "greener" product, but one that is strikingly beautiful aside from being both functional and unique.  While we don't claim to be saving the planet with our stone products, we can offer ones that create less overall impact than those quarried specifically for our purposes.  Comus supports green initiatives, including the Green Building Institute, here in Maryland.  If a product of ours is color-enhanced, we use water-based sealants or enhancers as opposed to a solvent-based chemical.  Our enhancers are specially formulated for us so as to produce no unnecessary harm.  It is not often that the mining or construction trades are viewed as completely "green" but we are taking steps at Comus Stone to produce as little additional impact as possible.  On the horizon for us are alternative energy initiatives to power our production facilities, and green roofs on our buildings where feasible.
